Hello!

Hello! Look here we are!
SupernovaStudios(thats us) Welcomes you to our Official Media Studies Blog where we have taken you on our journey to creating our final product; A film opening with a crime thriller genre, targeted for audience of 16-24.

Even though we all had specific job roles to adhere to we had ensured that everyone at Supernovastudios had experienced other roles as well as supporting each other unconditionally through the process. Below are our Official Job Roles.

Zeel: As the official editor of the group I had taken responsibility for all technical aspects of the final product as well as actually editing it. Furthermore, I had also taken responsibility for making sure that our vision turned into a reality and our final product was to our quality and standard and represented what we could do as a team. As well as taking responsibility of gathering all the shots by following the storyboard and script as well as changing aspects of our film opening if there were certain issues it was my job to edit the video to suit our Directors needs.

Sonali: As a production designer, I had taken responsibility for gathering props, costume and make-up alongside making sure the lighting we decided to use matched our genre I had also taken consideration of the other mise-en-scene aspects. I worked closely with the director and producer to decide which location would be the most appropriate to use.

Daniella : Being the director meant that I had to take on the responsibility of creatively converting our script to visual images. I worked closely with the D.O.P so that we could choose the best shot and angles to express the genre and the story. I also worked with the editor. I aided the editor in the creation of the final product concerning the technical elements. It was also my job to oversee the work of the sound and production teams so that I could provide input and overall be a link between the different roles.

Ritik : As the D.O.P I was in charge of providing the rest of the group with pictures and videos as I had the most experience among st the group when it take to operating a camera. I had to make sure that the footage I was producing for the editor to use was up to standard and followed the Directors script. I took into count what types of shots we should use and what lighting would suit the scene that we were filming. I also worked very close to the editor and helper the editor create the final look we had all in visioned, I was a great help to the editor as I had experience in editing. I had to make sure that I was able to bring to life what the director had produced on a script and make it a visual reality.

Rough Cut Feedback

Verbal Feedback for our Rough Cut:

Audience Member 1:
"I like the style you have aspired to do however you need to make it more apparent that there is a montage before the film opening begins. In addition to this many of the shots need to be edited and colour graded.

Audience Member 2:
"There is no continuity editing and several shots need to be taken again as when the actor opens the door she does not open it wide enough to exit and leave the house thus making the shot non-continuity."

Audience Member 3:
"It is not evident that it is taking place in a police station when she is walking past it. Her costume makes her look as if she is a pedestrian rather than a detective."

Audience Member 4:
"The shot of her on the bench is tilted thus making it look absolutely disgusting. Furthermore, when the actor throws the gun away and disposes of it the gun is not in the shot so how is the audience supposed to know where the gun is being thrown or that she does not want it in the first place. The actor needs to make her facial expressions more evident and personally i believe this shot is significant and needs to be shot again."

Audience Member 5:
"Many more shots need to be added to the beginning to adhere to the conventions of a crime thriller as there is confusion at the moment with the genre."

Edit Decision List

I have completed an edit decision list to be aware about what clips we are able to use and the reasons why compared to the clips we shall not be using as well as the reasons why. This will make it easier when I am editing as I have separated and renamed the clips I will be using from the clips I will not be using making the whole editing process much more organised.

Digitas- Advertising Workshop

Ritik and I had decided to attend a Digitas Advertising Workshop as we found it will be useful when we are advertising our film and had learnt many new things about the whole process of advertising which can then be used in our coursework.

Ritik and I went to an advertising workshop run by Digitas this helped us increase the skills we have when it comes to aspects such as marketing and will help us when we are making our Digi packs furthermore, we had the opportunity to be a part of a new programme called the ladder which allows young people to gain works experience in media related jobs and then obtain a work placement and even a job.

The importance of audience feedback is essential in order to make our script better.

Job Role Brochure: Producer

As the assistant producer I had decided to identify and analyse this role and what it takes to do this job by making a brochure.

Analysis of student film openings

By analysing previous film openings I can learn from previous students as well as gaining different ideas and formulating analysis of my own. Furthermore, I shall also ensure that i take into account both the positive and negative aspects of my own film opening once it is done- thoroughly evaluating it means that I am able to improve next year at A2 level.

Cinematography Practice

In order to practice cinematography Ritik and I, had practices some shots and how we may use some of them in our actual video such as the ticking clock as we will be using many close up shots it was essential that we had some practice before we actually went on and continued with filming. However, We did not have access to a DSLR and therefore most of it had been filmed on an Iphone5s this means that the quality was not the same and furthermore, there was also no tripod thus meaning some of our shots were shaky rather than steady. This problem can be easily overcome as during filming we will have access to a DSLR and a tripod.

Script Breakdown

Edited Script from Zeel Sanatkumar

From this activity I have learnt that the main task for a script is not only to ensure that the actors know what to say however, he script assist several other job roles such as the director, editor, cinematographer, the sound etc. Furthermore, it shows us how much accurate the script has to be in order to fulfil everyone' job roles; subsequently The screenplay is the guide for the Producers, Director, Actors, Crew of exactly what will appear on screen.  It is the common ground that everybody on the film will work with from start to finish of production. It tells the complete story, contains all action in the film and all dialogue for each character. It can also describe characters visually so filmmakers can try to capture their style, look or vibe.Since the script is the blueprint for the movie or TV show it also the best predictor of cost. Making a film takes careful planning of the budget and cost estimation can best be gleamed from the script. For example if the script calls for scenes that only CGI can accommodate the producers know they are in for a bigger budget. If the film is mostly dialogue driven, with no special effects and limited locations the budget should be much low!! The script also goes a long way in determining the schedule of your film. The schedule of the film  is important because it has a direct impact on the budget. A common cause for budget overruns is when their are disruptions or rescheduling that needs to be done. This is all meticulously planned out before hand using the script as a guide.

Iconography and Conventions

By identifying certain conventions and iconography it gives us a clearer perspective on how and why it is used in the thriller film openings that already professionally exist.

Script annotation

Script - Doctor Who Source - http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/scripts/doctor-who-series-3

Annotating this script helped me understand how a script is laid out and the different features you have to include in your script such as; page number, INT and EXT etc, so therefore I will be able to help the writer when we have to make our own script for our film. I will make sure she has included all the micro elements (Mise-en-scene, editing, camera and sound). My main role during the process is production designer, but I will still help other people from my team with their role. As I’m production designer I will be focusing more on mise-en-scene to help me visualize the script and the type of costumes the actors must wear, lighting etc.

Enchantress Pitch

We had to pitch our own individual film ideas to the class about how our film should unfold and the best film pitches have their final idea Incorporated with the actual film based on the group decisions and results on the best story.
